It started with a song… well actually a few! We all have our summer songs that bring back memories of those easy nights and mellow days of times gone by. The days are longer, the air is thicker, the sun is higher and somehow we are freer to enjoy the world around us… at least I like to think we are. At any rate, we are definitely more relaxed, clothing is light and airy, sandals and bare feet are normal and those dreaded winter storms become but a memory to us.

A few days ago as I was driving to work and listening to the radio a song came on that signifies the start of summer and I smiled to myself. The song was “On the Way to Cape May”, one that the local radio station always plays to signify the start of the summer season. It made me wish I was driving to one of the shore points instead of work but it still felt good to know the time had come. Time to shed our winter costumes, break out the sunscreen and shorts and just chill. This was followed by Bette Midler’s rendition of the classic Drifters song “Under the Boardwalk”. Somehow the 52 mile commute didn’t seem so long that morning, with thoughts of the beach and sand and sun on my mind.

This past Thursday, a friend on twitter shared a link to a new song. She described it as a feel good, summer song and her words rang true. The song was called “Shine” by a band called Calgary from Essex. I don’t know much about the band just yet (other than I really like their sounds) 😉 but I’ll be checking out more about them soon! For now, just click on the video and give it a listen… You’re gonna love this song!

All of this got me thinking about my favorite songs that are the heralds of summer, the beach, the sand, the sun. The summer songs that remind me of long lazy days and sultry nights with friends, talking about everything and nothing at the same time. Some songs are old, some are new however, they all bring smiles and a spring to your step when listening or singing along. They are happiness set to music, simple pleasures that make you want to get up and dance, sing along and just have a good time. These songs are like fairy floss for my psyche… light and airy, sugary sweet and mellowed out; about love and life and everything that makes me smile! So, here are a few favorite summer songs from my new playlist, a collection picked at random that I hope you will enjoy. They make me want to dance or sing along (sometimes both!) because that’s what the summer means to me… music, sun, dancing, sharing a drink with friends and just having a good time!

Happiness is life set to music, so please share! If you have a favorite summer song, please, send me a link, I’d really love to hear them! Comments are always welcome, share your thoughts and most of all enjoy the music! Cheers to the Summer of 2014!
